Australian Cartoonists' Association: Stanley Awards 2014

The Australian Cartoonists' Association (ACA) is the world's first cartooning organisation (since 1924), and has been running for 90 years. Every year for the past thirty years, Awards (colloquially known as "The Stanleys") have been presented to Australian artists and cartoonists to "acknowledge and celebrate the best in cartooning, comic book art, illustration and caricature", with a new Award added this year for Animation. Are you interested in joining? Membership is not limited to artists and cartoonists, either: Associate Membership is ideal for Fans of the medium who want to join in at the end of year workshops, or the many functions held throughout the year.

The Australian Cartoonists’ Association is now calling for entries for the 30th Stanley Awards. Submissions will be published in the annual ACA Year Book. Here's a run down of all the Stanleys that will be awarded this year at The Menzies Sydney on November 15, 2014.

STANLEY AWARD CATEGORIES

Comic Strip Artist
An artist whose published body of work is primarily a multi-panel sequential comic cartoon strip, adventure or illustrated comic strip.

Editorial/Political Cartoonist
An artist whose published body of work is political and/or social satire in cartoon form. It can be either single frame or comic strip.

Single Gag Cartoonist
An artist whose published body of work consists primarily of single frame landscape or portrait panel gags. A cartoonist cannot enter the same feature in either Comic Strip or Single Gag categories.

Caricaturist
An artist whose professional body of work is either published, commissioned or “live” caricatured likenesses.

Comic Book Artist
An artist whose published body of work consists primarily of sequential art drawn with the intention of conveying information and/or telling a story to the reader in the form of comic books (periodicals/‘floppies’), graphic novels, adventure cartoon strips with serial content and zines (containing sequential art content). A cartoonist cannot enter the same feature in the Comic Strip category.

Illustrator
An artist whose published body of work is published humorous and general illustration for newspaper/magazine articles, books, advertising etc. Work deemed to be political, single-gag, caricature, or comic strip based will not be eligible for this category.

Animation Cartoonist ***NEW AWARD**
An artist who is the original modeler, illustrator or cartoonist of the assets of a short animated piece for online broadcast, television, film, interactive digital products and motion comics (on-screen graphics, graphics-based TV show introductions or special effects for live action productions are ineligible). You must provide samples of animated works for submission and for print and a link to the animation online (if possible). An animation company can nominate an animator from the animated company's piece to be considered.

Stanley Awards Weekend (Part 3)

Saturday night, 26th October 2013: Stanley Awards

The night of night of the Australian Cartoonists' Association is the Stanley Awards dinner and ceremony. Once again, the Stanley's Committee did a great job at organizing the evening, with pre-dinner drinks at 6:30pm for a start at 7pm.

The MC for the night was Peter Berner, a comedian and TV personality (in Australia) who also happen to be a cartoonist and member of the ACA. Coincidence? I think not as Peter was at the Stanley Awards as a guest like us last year! He did a great job as an MC.

It was a great night and many congratulations to all the nominees and winners!

As usual, there was a silent auction to raise money for the ACA and I managed to snatch an original "Swamp" strip. I just love Swamp! Gary Clark was awarded a special award on the night to celebrate 10,000 (yes ten thousand) Swamp strips, not including Sunday strips! What an achievement!

Stanley Awards Weekend (Part 2)

Saturday 26th of October 2013:

As usual, I got up at 6am and since the breakfast bar was not going to be open until 7am, I went for a nice walk around the resort, see photos below:

After a nice buffet breakfast, it was time to attend the annual General Assembly of the Australian Cartoonists' Association (ACA). Members of the Committee, lead by Jules Faber, current ACA President, told us how the club was going and presented us with the financial audit of the club. Everything seems in order. After this official business done, the Committee answered questions from the ACA Members present. At 10am, it was time to start the ACA Conference itself.

First to speak was Jules Faber who gave the Presidential Welcome.

Brian Cook, a literary agent, showed us some typical costings for book publication and advertising and how much return an author and/or illustrator is likely to get. That was a bit disheartening to see how little royalty most authors get back.

Tom Richmond, Guest of Honour this year and President of the National Cartoonists' Society (USA) gave us a short course on caricature. Boy Tom is amazing! Basically, Tom talked about the art of caricature, what to look for in a face and asked the audience to practice with him. On the screen were projected some famous models and we were invited to draw at the same time as Tom. I suck at caricature, so my efforts were abysmal. Some of the other guys and girls though did some amazing work. It is easy to spot the real caricaturists! Below are a few photos:

This was followed by a short talk from volunteers of the Coffs Harbour Bunker Cartoon Gallery.

At lunchtime, it was time to buy second-hand books to raise money for the Bunker Cartoon Gallery as well as Tom Richmond's book and signed prints:

Straight after lunch, Tom Richmond, Anton Emdin and Dave Williams (editor of the Australian version of MAD Magazine) gave us an insight on how things work at MAD Magazine:

Tim McEwen and Dave Blumenstein then gave us a "State of the Comic Nation". Tim showed a vast number of examples of emerging comic-book artists while Dave concentrated on explaining the development, ups and downs of Squishface Studio in Melbourne.

Jason Chatfield then told us about the importance of being online. Jason talked about why you should check that your website is user-friendly when used from a mobile device and brushed on the importance of knowing how to work with Social Media to build more traffic and business.

Last but not least, Russ Radcliffe, editor for "Best Australian Political cartoons" showcased his favourite cartoons from the past ten years...

This concluded the official programme of the 2013 ACA Conference, and it was time to get ready for the 2013 Stanley Awards...

Stanley Awards 2013

Just back from an amazing "Stanley's Weekend" in Coffs Harbour. Over the next few days, I'll be posting photos and a bit of a summary of what happened this weekend.

However, the official email from the Australian Cartoonists' Association is below:

The 2013 Stanley Awards was presented last night at the Novotel Pacific Bay Resort in Coffs Habour.

The ACA congratulates the recipients of the Stanleys and thanks members and guests who ventured to Coffs Harbour to celebrate Australian cartooning.

Attached is a press release PDF detailing the winners of the awards on offer.

Gary Clark was also presented with a small trophy to commemorate his 10,000th Swamp comic strip (yep, 10,000!).

Congratulations also to Grant Brown for winning Cartoon On The NIght - the theme of which was "Where's Roger", dedicated to Roger and Marie Fletcher who missed this year's Stanleys after attending every single one since 1985.

The cartoon conference was also a success and the ACA thanks all participants. All details will be in the next issue of Inkspot.

Stanley Awards - Cartoonist Of The Year finalists announced‏!

From the Australian Cartoonists' Association:

The "Stanleys", once described as "the Oscars for Australian cartooning", are now in their 29th year and are presented in six categories, including the Gold Stanley for Cartoonist of the Year. They're named after Stan Cross, who drew what has been acknowledged as Australia's funniest cartoon, "For Gorsake Stop Laughing, This is Serious". The awards themselves are modeled on the characters in his cartoon.

The six finalists for the Gold Stanley for Cartoonist of the Year are:

Peter Broelman – National political cartoonist (South Australia)
Pat Campbell – The Canberra Times (ACT)
Anton Emdin – MAD magazine contributor (NSW)
Glen Le Lievre – The Age and SMH contributor (NSW)
David Pope – The Canberra Times (ACT), and
David Rowe – The Financial Review (NSW)

Six bronze Stanley Awards will also be announced on the night; Caricaturist, Comic Strip Artist, Comic Book Artist, Editorial/Political Cartoonist, Illustrator and Single Gag Cartoonist. The Jim Russell Award will also be presented for outstanding contribution to Australian cartooning.

Held at the Novotel Coffs Harbour, the awards are a part of a big weekend for cartoonists and includes a cartoon conference, the 25th Rotary Cartoon Awards, and a visit by one of the usual gang of idiots at MAD magazine, American caricaturist Tom Richmond.

Each year, ACA Full Members can display artwork in the "Year Book". The book is then compiled, printed and sent to all ACA Full Members along with a voting form. Each member can then vote for their favourite cartoonist in each of the categories. An independent company collects and tallies all the votes and the awards are announced during the Stanley Awards' weekend.

Stanley Awards 2013

I'll be in Coffs Harbour (NSW, Australia) for the weekend of the 25th to 27th of October 2013 for the annual cartoonists conference and Stanley Awards presentation.

This year, the Stanley Awards will be held in conjunction with the 25th Rotary International Cartoon Awards on Friday night and the first Open Day of the Bunker Cartoon Gallery on the Sunday.

I'll attend all these events and I believe book signing and live drawings will happen on Sunday the 27th of October. So, if you're in Coffs Harbour on that weekend, come and say hello!

Stanley's Conference Special Guests

The two Special Guests at the Stanley's Conference were Alexander Stitt and Sam Viviano.

Alex Stitt talked about his career and the various ups and downs of working in advertising, film, documentaries, animations, etc... He also gave another talk on his involvement with Australia Post creating stamps.

Sam Viviano gave two talks also. The first one about his career while the second one was centered around celebrating the 60 year's anniversary of MAD Magazine.

Both Alex and Sam were all round nice guys and mingled with all Australian Cartoonists' Association members present at the Stanley's Conference. They shared a lot of anecdotes, some funny, some sad, but boy, both of them were great speakers!

Stanley Awards Winners 2012

Last night, the 2012 Stanley Awards of the Australian Cartoonists' Association were awarded to:

Anton Emdin: Best Illustrator.

David Pope: Best Caricaturist.

Gary Clark: Best Comic Strip Artist.

David Pope: Best Editorial/Political Cartoonist.

Dean Alston: Best Single Gag Cartoonist.

David Follett: Best Comic Book Artist.

David Pope was also voted "Cartoonist of the Year", taking home, for 2012, a staggering 3 Stanley Awards!!!

It was a fabulous weekend. I'll post a few photos over the next few days...

Off to the Stanley Awards

5:30am, tomorrow morning, I'm off to Newcastle (Australia) to attend the Stanley Awards weekend organized by the Australian Cartoonists' Association.

Friday and Saturday are basically taken by the conference where a number of speakers will entertain us. Friday night will also be the opening of the "Timelines Cartoons Exhibition".

The Stanley Awards dinner and presentations will be on Saturday night...

Should be a great weekend...

Stanley Awards: Cartoonists of the Year Nominees

The Australian Cartoonists Association is proud to announce the six finalists for the Gold Stanley for Cartoonist Of The Year to be announced at the 28^th Stanley Awards in Newcastle on November 17.

Named after the famous 1930’s legendary Smiths’ Weekly Cartoonist (and ACA Past President) Stan Cross and his timeless cartoon - “For gorsake, stop laughing - this is serious!”, the Stanley Awards are globally recognised and revered.

Award categories include comic strip, single gag, editorial/political, caricature, illustration and comic book art. Finalists and winners of these awards will be announced during the Stanley Awards dinner.

The finalists for the Gold Stanley Award sponsored by the Herald Sun are (in alphabetical order):

Peter Broelman – editorial cartoonist for Fairfax and APN regional newspapers and recipient of the Gold Stanley in 2005 and 2009.

Anton Emdin – freelance illustrator for MAD, The Spectator, People and last year’s Gold Stanley winner.

Mark Knight – editorial cartoonist from the Herald Sun who was awarded the Gold Stanley in 2006 and is also a three-time Walkley Award winner for Best Cartoon.

Glen Le Lievre – freelance cartoonist with The New Yorker, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

David Pope – editorial cartoonist from the Canberra Times and 2010 Gold Stanley winner.

David Rowe – editorial artist with the Australian Financial Review who has collected three Gold Stanleys in 2002, 2007 and 2008 and is also a two-time Walkley Award recipient.

Timelines Exhibition in Newcastle (Australia)

The Australian Cartoonists' Association (ACA) is organizing the "Timelines Exhibition" to coincide with the Stanley Awards next weekend (16/17 November 2012).

The ACA is holding the exhibition at the Newcastle Council’s “Lovett Gallery” which averages 2000 people through per week. The exhibition will be running for 5 weeks, starting on Friday the 16th of November 2012.

The exhibition will be opened by the Mayor of Newcastle on the Friday night of the Stanley Awards weekend, with cartoonists in attendance drawing on the far wall.

Newspapers and TV media will be covering the event.

So, if you live in Newcastle (Australia) or nearby, come and check this cartoon exhibition. Submissions from some of the best cartoonists in Australia, and some unknowns like me, have been received for the exhibition and I was told the Gallery's walls will be packed with cartoons!

I know at least one of my cartoons will be displayed, maybe even two as I sent two...

Stanley Awards

Wow, only two weeks to go before the Stanley Awards!

For those of you who don't know, the Australian Cartoonists' Association (ACA: http://www.cartoonists.org.au) holds every year the "Stanley Awards". It is basically a whole weekend event with a Cartoonist Conference on the Friday and Saturday and an Awards night and dinner on the Saturday night.

Basically, ACA Full-Members are eligible to enter the Stanley Awards in various categories. A "Year Book" is produced and all ACA Full-Members have to vote for three choices in each category. An independent auditor collects all the votes and the winners get a "Stanley Award" in the given category.

This year, my cartoons are contesting for the "Comic Strip" category. Needless to say my chances are very very slim as there are some amazing cartoonists in Australia.

A large proportion of Australian cartoonists are attending as well as a few cartoonists coming from overseas. It is always a great weekend, where you meet amazing people.
